What a great turnout we had at the Melbourne Chapter event on Thursday 24 August 2017 when Dr Jackie Graham led a lively (and insightful) discussion on “Australian culture – a help or hindrance to quality”. Any event featuring Jackie is especially worth attending. With her own background of working for some 5 years closely with Dr Deming, and in many countries and cultures, she brought some interesting perspectives and humorous stories to really illustrate the various cultural imprints.
The crowd also brought relevant and interesting insights. Some, because they were from other cultures. Others, because they currently work across cultures and experience the ways the cultural differences express themselves in Quality.
Each culture of course has different characteristics of what Quality actually means to them. Cultural norms in relation to levels of power separation in the workplace, the team/individualisation dimension, and the emphasis on change or stability all play a part.
And the answer? Well, it all depends. But suffice to say that good leadership is a defining factor in focusing culture to help the way Quality is managed.
